12/22/2009 - Lawrence, KS (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks put the nation's longest homecourt winning streak on the line this evening, as they welcome the California Golden Bears to Lawrence for an intriguing non- conference battle from the Allen Fieldhouse.
The Jayhawks are in the midst of a three-game homestand and are coming off a 75-64 victory over Michigan this past weekend. The win improved Kansas' win streak at home to an impressive 48 consecutive games and kept the team perfect on the season overall.
The Golden Bears have also been flawless at home this season (5-0), but the road has been a different story, with California dropping three of four games outside of Berkeley. However, the lone victory on the road came in the team's last outing back on December 9th, a 79-54 drubbing of Pacific in Stockton.
This is the 18th all-time meeting in this series, one which Kansas has dominated with wins in 14 of the previous 17 matchups, including a 69-56 decision in Kansas City back in 2005, the last time these two programs met.
Mike Montgomery's Golden Bears were supposed to be a conference contender in the Pac-10 this season, and that may still be the case, despite three losses to now nationally-ranked teams in as many attempts. Still, Cal usually has a chance in any game thanks to stellar play at the offensive end of the court. The team is averaging a healthy 79.1 ppg thus far, getting it done on .466 shooting. Senior guard Jerome Randle is the catalyst for the squad, pacing the team in both scoring (19.6 ppg) and assists (46). Backcourt mate Patrick Christopher adds to the perimeter assault at 15.6 ppg. The return of Theo Robertson (14.7 ppg) after missing six games, gives the team yet another offensive threat, along with Jamal Boykin (12.2 ppg). Boykin has really emerged in the last three outings, posting 66 points and 32 rebounds over that time. It was Christopher who led the way for Cal in the win at Pacific, finishing with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Randle and Boykin poured in 15 points apiece for the Golden Bears, who shot .525 from the floor in the game.
The top team in the land is flourishing at both ends of the floor this season, with the result being a gaudy +30.5 scoring margin. The Jayhawks are converting an impressive 51.3 percent of their shots, leading to 88.8 ppg, all while limiting foes to a mere 58.3 ppg, on just 34.5 percent shooting. The team has also dominated on the boards (+9.3 rebounding margin) and is forcing 16 turnovers per outing. Four of the team's five starters are averaging double figures, starting with freshman phenom Xavier Henry's 17.7 ppg. Henry has been lethal from behind the arc, hitting nearly 50 percent of his long range attempts (26-of-53). All-American candidates Sherron Collins (13.9 ppg, team- high 42 assists) and Cole Aldrich (11.3 ppg, team-high 9.7 rpg) are perfect complements to Henry's explosiveness. Marcus Morris (11.1 ppg) rounds out the top scoring threats and is coming off a game in which he posted team-highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Jayhawks to their first-ever win over the Wolverines. Collins poured in 19 points in support, while Collins finished with 15. Kansas was once again efficient in its shooting, knocking down 52.1 percent from the floor, while holding Michigan to a mere .358 effort.
